GREENSBORO, N.C. —The Vanderbilt track and field team had three competitors on day two of the NCAA East Preliminary Round on Friday, May 24. Commodores competed in the 100 meter hurdles and the high jump.
Jennifer Cannon, one day after narrowly missing a trip to the quarterfinals in the 400 meter hurdles, returned to compete in the 100 meter hurdles. She owns the school record in the event, but could not quite find that same speed and placed 41st in 13.84 seconds.
Vanderbilt’s other competition for the day came on the field side, as Brionne Williams and Ellie Tidman returned to the NCAA meet looking to advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene. High jump is one of the most competitive events, with just 12 advancing from 48 athletes, competing on two pits simultaneously.
Williams cleared the first three heights, making it over 1.77 meters (5′ 9.75″) on her third attempt. She failed to clear the next height of 1.81 meters (5′ 11.25″), which would have been enough to advance to Eugene. She finished tied for 24th.
Tidman’s top clearance was 1.72 meters (5′ 7.75″), which she cleared on her second attempt. The junior finished 30th overall.
Tomorrow will be Vanderbilt’s final chance to send an athlete to the NCAA Championships. Senior Kristen Findley, who a season ago missed a trip to the national meet in the 1,500 meters by .16, will look for redemption in the 1,500 at 5:30 p.m. CT. Findley will be in the first of two heats of 12 runners, with the top five plus the two next-best times advancing to Eugene.
