VU falls to South Carolina, 3-0

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Vanderbilt women’s soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision at Southeastern Conference Eastern Division rival South Carolina on Sunday.

The Gamecocks scored twice in the game’s first five minutes to break the game open, then held on before icing the game in the final minutes with a third score.

“We dug ourselves a hole way too early,” VU Head Coach Derek Greene said. “To go down 2-0 on the road is not easy to come back from. Once we settled in, we actually played pretty well, we just didn’t have enough dangerous chances to get back in it.”

Redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Alexa Levick started her second straight game this weekend after missing a month due to a concussion. She played 22 minutes before giving way to junior Jessica Amlaw. Amlaw made five saves for the Commodores in 68 minutes, stopping a penalty kick by Kortney Rhoades in the 67th minute.

“Jess stepped in and played well,” Greene said. “It’s been good to have her back with the team. She made a couple big-time saves, especially on the penalty kick.”

Vanderbilt returns home next weekend to play host to LSU and Arkansas. Friday’s game against the Tigers, which begins at 7 p.m. CT at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex, will serve as the squad’s annual “Power in Pink” game to raise awareness of breast cancer.

“As a team we need to regroup,” Greene said. “We’ve had a really difficult stretch being on road 8 of the last 11 days. After four straight road games against quality competition, we’re excited to come home to play against an LSU team that’s playing very well.”
