JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Vanderbilt men’s golf team captured their first tournament of the fall and their fourth of the Scott Limbaugh era Tuesday afternoon in Jacksonville at the Eagle/Osprey Intercollegiate, winning the tournament by eight strokes over second-place Tulsa with a final total of 876 (292-291-293). Freshman Matthias Schwab was the Commodores’ top finisher, ending the event in a tie for second with a score of even par-216 (75-69-72)
The Commodores, who led after a blustery 36 holes on Monday at the Deerwood Country Club, maintained their lead and were steady in their final 18 holes on their way to the championship. Schwab, Hunter Stewart, and Zack Jaworski each fired an even-par 72, while the other two Vanderbilt players in the lineup, Carson Jacobs and Ben Fogler, each carded a third-round 77. Charlie Ewing played as an individual and finished Tuesday with a 75.
Four Vanderbilt players finished in the top 11 individually, with Schwab’s second-place finish leading the way. Stewart carded a final score of 220 (67-81-72) to finish eighth, while Jaworski ended the tournament with a 222 (75-75-72) and finished in a tie for 11th. Ewing finished his tournament with a 221 (72-74-75), which was good for a tie for ninth.
Jacobs carded a 226 (75-74-77) to finish in a tie for 26th, while Fogler finished in a tie for 37th with a total of 228 (78-73-77).
“Obviously, I am very proud of how this team fought throughout the tournament,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “It was a team effort. The conditions were difficult again today and the guys were resilient when things didn’t go the way they wanted them to go. It was a great way for us to finish the fall season. I am excited about this group but even more excited that we all know we can get better.”
Individually, Tulsa’s Logan McCraken won medalist honors, shooting a five-under par, 211.
The Eagle/Osprey Intercollegiate was the Commodores’ final tournament of the fall. They return to the course in the spring at the Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla., on February 15-16.
