Vanderbilt Tames Wildcats

No. 33 Vanderbilt defeats Kentucky on Sunday

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team picked up a victory on Sunday at the Hillary J. Boone Tennis Facility, posting a 6-1 win over No. 52 Kentucky.

Vanderbilt, ranked 33rd in the latest ITA rankings, began Sunday’s match with a win, grabbing the early doubles point. Finishing first on Court 1, Célia-Belle Mohr and Anessa Lee overcame Kentucky’s Lidia Gonzalez and Ellie Eades, 6-3. Sonya Macavei and Holly Staff followed suit, taking Court 3 with a 6-2 victory over Zoe Hammond and Ellie Myers. Valeria Ray and Bridget Stammel’s match went unfinished at 5-4.

The Commodores charged on, taking back-to-back wins in singles. Mohr led the Dores, defeating Elizabeth Stevens on Court 1 in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Just after, Ray overcame Eades 6-2, 6-2, alongside Stammel who took Court 2 over her Wildcat opponent. Lee and Staff both defeated their opponents to extend the Dores lead to 6-0. Amy Stevens was left on Court 6, and after dropping the first set, she came back to claim the second in a tiebreaker before falling in a super tiebreaker to conclude the match.
