The Music City Challenge opened up competition on Friday night and nine Vanderbilt athletes competed in the first day of the two-day meet featuring 24 schools.

Senior Simone Charley finished third overall in the triple jump with a season-best leap of 43′ 7.75″. Fellow senior Tierney Price also competed in the event and recorded a jump of 39′ 8″.

Senior Sarah Goodale ran in the 200-meter dash and placed 52nd overall with a time of 25.91. Goodale is also scheduled to compete in the long jump and the 60-meter hurdles tomorrow.

Sophomore Devon Grisbaum ran in the 5000-meter run to round out competition for the Commodores in the first day of the Music City Challenge and finished with a time of 17:43.56, which marked a new personal best and placed 22nd overall.

On the men’s side, Vanderbilt had five runners in the 5000-meter run. Jake Van Geffen led the way for the Commodores with a 16th place finish and a time of 14:49.19 and Nikos Gkotsis finished shortly behind with a time of 14:53.36, which was good for an 18th place finish.

Charley, Goodale, Price, Gkotsis and Van Geffen represent five of the 13-member senior class that will be recognized at 12:40 p.m. during Saturday’s portion of the meet. Other seniors who will be honored include Reagan Anderson, Sarah Bell, Carmen Carlos, Skyler Carpenter, Courtney Clayton, Courtney Kriegshauser, Katie Watts, and Dan Arthur.

Two facility records were set on the first day of the Music City Challenge. Keturah Orji (Georgia) won the triple jump with a facility record-setting mark of 46′ 3.25″ and Anne-Marie Blaney (UCF) broke the facility’s 5000-meter run record by nearly 30 seconds with a time of 15:55.69.
