JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Commodore men’s golf team is in first place in the team standings at the Eagle/Osprey Intercollegiate in Jacksonville, Fla., after carding a two-round team score of 583 (292-291) in windy and rainy conditions Monday at the Deercreek Country Club. The Commodores, who hold a seven-stroke lead over second-place Southeastern Louisiana, were led by freshman Matthias Schwab, who is in fifth place on the individual leader board with an even-par, 144 (75-69).

Vanderbilt braved 25 mile-per-hour winds and a constant rain throughout their two rounds on Monday, but still managed to have three golfers in the top 16, and an individual who is in seventh place. Schwab carded a 69 in his second round in route to his 144, and Hunter Stewart (T-10) carded the tournament’s low individual round with a 67 in his opening round. Carson Jacobs (T-16) was steady with a 75 and 74, and Charlie Ewing, who played as an individual, tallied a score of 146 (72-74).

“It was a really good test today with the wind blowing 25 mph,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “We knew par was a great score on any hole. The first round Hunter stepped up big for us when we needed it. I was very proud of him. In the afternoon, I was really proud of how the guys fought. Every single one of them competed hard. It was a real team effort all day. Matthias’ 69 this afternoon was a great round that lifted our team up. Tomorrow should be a fun round for us. We have to continue to have the right focus on the right things.”

Individually, Mercer’s Trey Rule has a two-stroke lead on Schwab and leads all individuals at the tournament. There are three players tied for second, one stroke back of Rule.

The final round of the Eagle/Osprey Intercollegiate concludes on Tuesday, with the Commodores’ first tee time set for 9 a.m. ET off of the first tee.
