Vanderbilt Falls in Game 2

Carter Holton strikes out nine

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt fell 5-2 to Tennessee in the Game 2 of the series on Saturday night at Hawkins field.

Tennessee entered the scoring column with a one-out double in the top of the first to score one. A ground-rule double plated another and the Vols added a third on a wild pitch to take a 3-0 lead.

The Volunteers pushed their lead to five with a two-run homer in the top of the fifth.

Vanderbilt broke into the scoring column with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Enrique Bradfield Jr. led off the frame with a solo home run, marking his third homer on the year. One out later, Spencer Jones connected on a solo shot to center, his fifth on the season, to set the score at 5-2, eventual final.

Carter Holton (4-2) suffered his second loss on the season. Holton allowed five runs (two earned) on five hits, while walking three and striking out nine.

The Commodores used a trio of arms out of the bullpen. Bryce Cunningham worked 1.2 scoreless frames, allowing just one hit while picking up two strikeouts.

The sophomore duo of Nelson Berkwich covered the final 1.2 innings. Berkwich pitched 1.0 hitless inning with one punchout, while Donye Evans retired the final two batters in the top of the ninth.

Vanderbilt and Tennessee will meet at 1 p.m. CT on Sunday for the series finale, with action airing live on SEC Network+.
