Postgame Notes:

  • Vanderbilt falls to 1-1 on the season.
  • Cleveland State ties the all-time series with the Commodores at 1-1, taking the first tilt between the two squads at Memorial Gym.
  • The loss marks the first non-conference home defeat since a 74-55 loss to UIC on December 3, 2008. The Commodores had held a 20-game home non-conference streak.
  • VU committed 21 turnovers, allowing 22 points to be scored off them. The last time Vandy recorded 20 turnovers in a game was when they turned it over 23 against St. Mary’s on January 22, 2011.
  • Vanderbilt trailed the entire game, not once holding a lead. Vanderbilt cut the lead to three, but that was as close as the Commodores would get.
  • Vanderbilt scored 18 of its 58 points from the charity stripe, shooting 68%.

Second Half Notes:

  • Vanderbilt went on a 14-2 run early in the half, cutting the Cleveland State lead to three, at 41-38 with 13:32 left.
  • CSU scored seven straight points from 11:27 to 9:54 left in the half to stretch their lead to 10 points just over midway through the period. Vanderbilt never got closer than six the rest of the way.
  • Vanderbilt had eight turnovers in the second half.

First Half Notes:

  • The Commodores won the opening tip for the second straight contest, falling to 1-1 when doing so this season.
  • CSU went on an 11-4 run to open the half.
  • Dores shot 25% through the second media timeout, going 3-12 from the floor and committing 3 turnovers in that time.
  • The Commodores shot 29.2% in the first half, their lowest first half shooting percentage since Georgia last year (21.6%, 2/16/11).
  • VU had 13 turnovers in the first half; CSU scored 15 points off turnovers, vs Vanderbilt’s 5 points off of turnovers.
  • Leading scorer in the first half was Jeffery Taylor, with 5 points.
  • `Dores trailed by 13 points at the half, 37-24. Largest point deficit at the half last year was 11 points against W. Virginia (11/19/10).
  • Last time Vanderbilt had 13 turnovers in the first half was vs. Missouri on 12/2/09.

Individual Notes:

  • John Jenkins led Vanderbilt with 17 points. With his 12th point of the game he became the 42nd Commodore to record 1,000 points.
  • Lance Goulbourne tied his career record for steals in a game with 3, set twice before, most recently in the season opener against Oregon (11/11/11).
  • Goulbourne added 11 points to mark his 14th career double-digit scoring game.
  • Steve Tchiengang recorded a career-best 10 rebounds; his previous record was nine, set on 12/29/10 against Marquette.
  • Josh Henderson tied his career best of four rebounds, seeing action in his second contest as a redshirt freshman.
  • Redshirt Freshman James Siakam saw his first action as a Commodore, attempting one shot against Cleveland State.
  • Jeffery Taylor scored nine points for Vanderbilt but also tied a career-high with six turnovers in the loss.
