Vanderbilt advances to Friday’s Bracket I championship game to play Florida. The Commodores will have to beat Florida twice to reach the MCWS Championship Finals. Florida will be the home team.
North Carolina ends its season with a 51-16 record after going 1-2 in the MCWS.
*-The nine MCWS games have averaged 2:58 this season, which is on pace to be the first MCWS to average less than three hours per game since 2003. Six of the nine games have been under 3:00, including tonight’s game which took 2:41.
*-Tonight was the first errorless game at the 2011 MCWS. The last time there was an error-free game at the MCWS was on June 22, 2010, between South Carolina and Arizona State.
*-This is the 10th time in MCWS history that featured at least three teams from the same conference, and the first since the ACC had three teams in 2008. The SEC has had at least three participants on six occasions (1990, 1996, 1997,1998, 2004 and 2011).
*-With a 6-1 record in the 2011 MCWS, the SEC will be guaranteed three of the final four teams in competition in Omaha (Vanderbilt, South Carolina and Florida). No league has ever had three of the final four teams remaining in the MCWS.
*-There have been seven triples in the 2011 MCWS, the most since there were eight triples in the 2008 MCWS.
*-The two home runs by Vanderbilt tied the TD Ameritrade Park record, set two previous times. The last was on May 24th by Missouri State (vs. Southern Illinois).
Vanderbilt
*-Vanderbilt improves to 54-11 on the season and its 54 wins ranks second nationally and matches the school record set in 2007. Vanderbilt is now 14-7 against ranked foes.
*-Vanderbilt is the first team at the 2011 MCWS to hit more than one homer in a game, hitting a pair of homers on Wednesday.
*-Vanderbilt is now 44-2 this season when scoring five or more runs in a game, and 44-4 when scoring first
*-Taylor Hill allowed one run over seven innings of work against North Carolina and has allowed two earned runs in 15 innings of NCAA Tournament action. He has allowed two earned runs or less in each of his last four starts dating back to May 13, and had allowed more than three runs once in 17 starts in 2010. He is 2-0 with a 1.20 ERA in two NCAA Tournament starts.
*-On the season, Vanderbilt starters are a combined 39-6.
*-Tony Kemp picked up his second triple of the MCWS and seventh of the season in the bottom of the first inning. He is now one triple shy of Vanderbilt’s single-season record of eight set by Ryan Klosterman in 2004. Kemp is hitting .455 (5-for-11) in three MCWS games.
*-Kemp’s two triples marks the first time a player has had two triples in the MCWS since Stanford’s Cord Phelps in 2008 (Kemp is the 34th player to have a pair of triples in the MCWS). The MCWS series record for triples is three, held by Buddy Chain, Mississippi, 1966; Sonny Siebert, Missouri, 1958; Arthur Ersepke, Southern California, 1960.
*- Connor Harrell belted his second homer of the MCWS in the bottom of the second inning and went 2-for-3 with three RBI tonight. He has two of the six homers hit in the MCWS and now has nine homers this season. Herrell is hitting .444 (4-for-9) with two homers and five RBI in Omaha, leading all players in homers, RBI, runs scored (five) and total bases (10).
*-Vanderbilt’s bullpen has not allowed a run in three games, spanning 9.1 innings, as they have combined to strike out 10 and allow three hits in that span. Corey Williams has appeared in all three games and has not allowed a run in 5.2 innings of work.
North Carolina
*-North Carolina falls to 51-16 on the season and 15-19 in eight MCWS appearances. Its 51 wins ranks fifth nationally, as only five schools will finish with 50 or more wins. UNC compiled a 6-2 mark in the NCAA tournament and 1-2 at the MCWS.
*-It is only the third time in 67 games that North Carolina has been held to one run or less. The other games were against Seton Hall (3-1, 2/27) and Georgia Tech (3-0, 5/15).
*-North Carolina hit .240 in three MCWS games after hitting .324 in going 5-0 in Regional and Super Regional play.
*- Jacob Stallings finished the game 2-for-4 with two doubles, his first two extra base hits in the MCWS. Stallings hit .400 (4-for-10) in the MCWS.
*-North Carolina finished the MCWS 7-for-39 (.179) with runners in scoring position and 1-7 (.143) with the bases loaded.
*-North Carolina starter Greg Holt lasted 2.2 innings in his start of the season. He matched his career high with five runs set two otheroccasions, most recently against Coastal Carolina on 4/14/10. Holt pitched 1.1 shutout innings in the MCWS opener against Vanderbilt on Saturday.
*- Four North Carolina relievers combined to toss 5.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just four hits in that span.
*-North Carolina stranded 34 runners in the MCWS, including 18 that were in scoring position.
*-North Carolina was retired in order only eight times in three games at the MCWS.
*-North Carolina committed only one error in three games in Omaha (.990) and finished the year with a school-record .979 fielding percentage.
