OXFORD, Miss. — The Vanderbilt women’s track and field team completed Day 1 of the Joe Walker Invitational at Ole Miss on Friday. At the end of the day, two Dores broke school records and several recorded personal best performances.
For the second week in a row, freshman Giavonna Meeks reset the program record in the hammer throw with a career-best toss of 52.51 meters. Meeks finished seventh in the open division of the event.
In the javelin, graduate student Beatrice Juskeviciute finished in first place and broke the school record with her 45.47-meter mark.
Three sophomore Commodores recorded personal bests in the 1,500 meters. Emma Curry finished the race in 4:28.34, Julia Rosenberg turned in a 4:28.53 and Cameron Fawcett clocked 4:29.49.
After day one of the heptathlon, senior Jada Sims stands in second place with 3,310 points, and senior Madison Murray stands in ninth place with 2,933 points. Sims recorded a personal-best time of 13.98 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, which is seventh all-time in Vanderbilt history. In the high jump, Sims tied for second place with a height of 1.70 meters, and Murray tied for fifth with a height of 1.64 meters. Murray’s shot put mark of 10.12 meters was a personal best. Both heptathletes PRed in the 200 meters. Sims finished the race in first place with a time of 24.66 seconds, and Murray finished in 26.17 seconds.
Saturday’s events will kick off at 10:15 a.m. with the heptathlon long jump.
