Traditions continue with festive flare

The members of the Vanderbilt cross country and track and field programs didn’t go trick-or-treating, but they did take part in two other Halloween staples — pumpkin carving and costumes.

Continuing a pair of long-standing team traditions, the Commodores held their 8th annual Fun Run last Friday, and then capped the weekend with their 9th annual Pumpkin Carving contest on Sunday.

During the Fun Run, the Commodores ditched their normal running gear and instead dressed up as animals … or Santa Claus … or sailors … or, well, you get the point.

“(The fun run) took place after a solid week of training,” said Vanderbilt assistant coach Rhonda Riley, “and it’s a chance for the ladies to relax, run around Nashville, take pictures, and enjoy time with the team. It’s something they will always remember about this program and it keeps the balance during this time of the year.”

At the Pumpkin Carving Contest, the Commodores divided up into teams and competed for bragging rights and the coveted MVP (“most valuable pumpkin”) award. Other awards included “Most creative” and “Best Try.”
