CLEMSON, S.C.–The Vanderbilt women’s track and field team opened their season at Clemson today at the Orange & Purple Winter Classic with the high jumpers leading the way in the events.
Vanderbilt sophomores Brionne Williams and Ellie Tidman topped the high jump scoring, with Williams clearing 1.75m with Tidman right behind with 1.70m. William’s 1.75m jump (5-8 3/4) was both a personal best and placed her amongst all-time leaders for Vanderbilt, at the No. 3 spot.
Nashville local and freshman Janetra Gleaves placed in the prelims for the 60 meter hurdles, scoring fifth overall in the finals with a time of 8.83. Her time made her No. 3 All-Time for Vanderbilt’s Indoor Track. Gleaves also competed in the high jump, clearing 1.60m on the jump for a five-way seventh place finish in the event.
In the pole vault, Meagen Martin led the way for the Commodores, clearing the bar at 3.65m, placing fifth in the event. Renee Maggart (3.35) and Alyson Hasty (3.20m) also cleared the bar with their performances.
The Commodores will reconvene after the New Year when they compete in the Kentucky Invitational in Lexington, Ky. on January 13th and 14th.
Known for their distance runners and sprinters and fresh off unprecedented success in their cross country season, the Commodores are hoping for a solid season as they build their hurdles, jumps, and pole events. The Dores brought in new coach Donnie Young to assist Clark Humphreys, Rhonda Riley, and head coach Steve Keith this season.
