CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt’s track and field team opened up its 2009 outdoor season with a solid performance at the annual Austin Peay Spring Fling. Vanderbilt’s middle and long distance runners teamed up with the VU men’s cross country team for the first outdoor event of the season.
The Commodores were paced by cross country standout Kristabel Doebel-Hickok second-place finish in the women’s 3000-meter run. Doebel-Hickok’s time of 10:24.88 finished only three seconds off the first place runner.
Adrienne DiRaddo and Louise Hannallah recorded top-five finishes in the 1500-meter run, finishing in four and fifth place respectively while Amanda Scott placed seventh. DiRaddo led the Commodore contingent, turning in a time of 4:43.85 while Hannallah finished three-tenths of a second back of DiRaddo with a 4:44.10.
Sophomore Kate Southcote-Want posted a top-five finish of her own Saturday, with a 2:21.81 in the 800-meter run, placing fourth out of 23 runners. Junior middle distance runner Michele Sauer competed for the first time in the 2009 season Saturday, turning in a 2:24.53 in the 800, good for sixth place.
Six members of the Vanderbilt men’s cross country team pulled out its spikes for the first time this spring and returned to Nashville with three top-six finishes.
The Commodore men were led by Thomas Davis’s third-place finish in the 800-meter run. Davis, a junior from Louisville, Ky., got the `Dores rolling with a 800-meter team-best 1:57.73, finishing third out of 22 runners. Senior Mike Nordlund joined Davis with a solid time of his own, crossing the tape at the 2:00.64 mark.
Newcomer Kyle Rewick showed the Commodore faithful what they have to look forward to for the next four years as he cruised to fifth-place finish in the men’s 3000-meter run. Rewick’s kept pace with the front of the pack the whole race en route to defeating 24 runners.
Vanderbilt’s track and field team will split up its squad next weekend as some will travel to the Stanford Invitational while others will head to the Yellow Jacket Invite in Atlanta.
