Track & Field Just Misses NCAA Qualifier

Knoxville, Tenn. – Three Vanderbilt distance runners fell Friday in their attempt to qualify for the upcoming NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Junior Amy Huss and senior Erika Schneble finished mid-pack in the 5,000 meters, while senior Caitlin Shannon saw her chance of advancing to the 800-meter finals end after a disappointing race in the preliminaries.

Only one Commodore athlete, senior Garnetta Holloway, will compete in the NCAA Championships at Sacramento, Calif. Holloway, a senior from Cleveland, Tenn., will participate in the heptathlon after winning the Southeastern Conference event two weeks ago.

Huss provided the best Vanderbilt result, finishing 10th overall in 16:51.94. Schneble ran a disappointing race two weeks after turning in her best performance of the year in a second place finish at the SEC Championships. Schneble finished 23th overall in 17:38.21.

Molly Huddle of Notre Dame won the 5,000 in 16:24.51, just ahead of Michigan runners Erin Webster and Alyson Kohlmeier.

Shannon finished 20th overall in the 800, with an effort of 2:14.26 in the preliminiaries.
