Texas rallies past Vanderbilt, 7-5

Friday Recap: Vanderbilt 7, Texas 2

AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Longhorns rallied to overcome an early five-run deficit to beat Vanderbilt 7-5 in 12 innings Sunday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

The Commodores jumped out to a 5-0 lead through four innings but were held in check over the final eight innings. Meanwhile, the Texas offense woke up and scored seven runs on eight hits to complete the comeback and earn a series split. The Horns scored three runs in the fifth off senior Taylor Hill then took the lead in the eighth off redshirt sophomore Corey Williams.

The Vandy offense was supplied by junior Aaron Westlake, who drove in two runs with two RBI-singles, and sophomore Anthony Gomez, who drove in two runs in the fourth with a single. Freshman Tony Kemp collected three hits from the leadoff spot, including a RBI-triple in the fourth inning.

Junior Garvin Grayson started for the Dores and turned in three perfect innings before departing for the bullpen. Junior Navery Moore tossed one scoreless inning and redshirt sophomore Will Clinard pitched two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

The Commodores begin their annual Black and Gold Series on Thursday night at 6 p.m. at Hawkins Field. The team will play Friday night at 6 p.m. and Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. to wrap up their fall practice.

Notes of the Night

  • In the two games against Texas the two Vandy starters, junior Sonny Gray and junior Grayson Garvin, did not allow a hit and allowed only one base runner in their combined six innings.
  • 10 different Dores collected at least one hit on Sunday afternoon.
  • Junior Riley Reynolds finished the weekend with five hits, including three extra-base hits.
