Swimming to open season with Auburn, Friday

Sept. 26, 2013

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt swim team will open its season against Southeastern Conference foe and five-time NCAA Champion, Auburn. The meet is set for Friday at the Centennial Sportsplex. This will be the first head-to-head matchup between the Commodores and the Tigers since the 1991 season, and it will be the first time ever that Auburn has come to Nashville for a dual meet.

“This is a really exciting weekend for us,” said Vanderbilt swimming head coach Jeremy Organ. “This marks the first time since our team came back in 2006 that we’re swimming against Auburn, who is one of the perennial swimming powers in the country. We’re really excited to be able to compete against such great talent, and we’re looking forward to having a great atmosphere to swim in Friday.”

The Commodores are returning 11 from last seasons record-setting team. In 2013 the ‘Dores picked up their most-ever dual-meet wins (three) and set 16 school records at the SEC Championships. Included in the returners are SEC finalists Elly Faulkner, Lauren Torres and Chrissy Oberg. In addition, Friday will showcase Vanderbilt’s large freshman class.

Auburn comes to Nashville after finishing their 2013 season 13th at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships and fifth at the SEC Championships.

The Tigers are returning three All-Americans from last years squad in Emily Bos (200 MR, 50 free, 100 back, 400 MR, 400 FR), Megan Fonteno (400 FR) and Olivia Scott (100 fly, 200 MR, 400 MR, 400 FR).

Vanderbilt and Auburn have matched up five times with the last time coming during the 1990-91 season. Auburn holds the edge over the Commodores, 3-2.
