Sunday Matinee Goes to the Huskies

UConn downs Vanderbilt 6-2

LOS ANGELES — Vanderbilt fell 6-2 to UConn at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Sunday.

The Commodores totaled 10 hits to UConn’s seven. Brodie Johnston and RJ Austin tallied three hits apiece while Riley Nelson posted a 2-for-4 day.

UConn put traffic on the bases in the top of the first but Vanderbilt starting pitcher Cody Bowker settled in, holding the Huskies to one run in the inning.

Austin singled to lead off the bottom of the first and stole second. After moving up to third on a groundout, Austin scored on a single by Nelson to tie the game at 1-1.

Jonathan Vastine hit a two-out single in the bottom of the second and stole second before scoring on an RBI double by Austin to give Vandy a 2-1 lead.

UConn used a pair of home runs in the top of the fourth to retake the lead and hit another homer in the top of the fifth to go in front 5-2.

A wild pitch in the top of the sixth stretched the Huskies’ lead to four.

The Dores threatened with two runners on base in both the eighth and ninth innings but were unable to mount a comeback.

The Commodores return to Nashville for a pair of midweek games at The Hawk, taking on Evansville on Tuesday followed by St. Bonaventure on Wednesday.
