With summer in full swing, the Commodores are back to work on the diamond in summer leagues. Junior-to-be Tyler Beede leads a list of 19 Commodores in action this summer as the right-hander suits up for Team USA. Beede is the 10th Commodore to wear the Stars & Stripes for the Collegiate National Team and the first since Sonny Gray and Jason Esposito donned the Red, White & Blue in 2010. Beede made his debut for Team USA on Sunday night in Moorehead City, N.C., against the Moorehead City Marlins allowing one run on one hit and two walks with four strikeouts over four innings for the win. Team USA leaves for Japan next week and is scheduled play games against Japanese collegiate teams July 5-11 before returning to the States to host Cuba in a five-game series July 18-23.
Six Commodores are on the Cape this summer with pitchers Adam Ravenelle and Brian Miller joining Rhett Wiseman on the Cotuit roster. All three players are seeing their first action in the top collegiate summer league. Ravenelle pitched in the New England Collegiate Baseball League last summer and Miller sat out last summer after having hip surgery. Wiseman posted a stellar freshman season and is back in his home state where he was named the Gatorade Player of the Year his senior year. He starred as the top prospect in the Futures League as an incoming freshman last summer.
The other three Dores on the Cape this summer play for Orleans with pitchers Philip Pfeifer and Jared Miller teaming up with Vince Conde. Pfeifer returns to the Firebirds for the second straight summer after going 2-2 with 27 strikeouts in 25.2 innings. Miller makes his first appearance on the Cape after earning an All-Star nod in the Northwoods League last summer. Conde had a standout sophomore season for the Dores and makes his first trip to the Cape this summer as well. He had a strong summer last year for Laconia in the NECBL being named the league’s sixth-best prospect.
The NECBL has a small village of Commodores this summer with 10 VU players on rosters. Steven Rice and Nevin Wilson both return to the league with seven newcomers in tow. Rice is back with Sanford for the second straight summer after pitching in a team-high 17 games for the Mainers last summer. Zander Wiel and Will Cooper join Rice in Sanford for the summer. Wiel has already made his presence known being named Player of the Week after hitting .364 with two homers, two doubles and nine RBI last week. Wilson heads back to Laconia, where he brings Tyler Campbell and Luke Stephenson. Campbell is off to a solid start hitting a team-best .417 with 10 stolen bases through 11 games. Joel McKeithan returns to Newport for the second straight summer. Tyler Ferguson makes his summer ball debut with Newport. Kyle Smith and Pat Delano round out the Vandy contingent with Vermont. Delano has looked sharp in his four outings allowing two runs in his first 9.1 innings.
John Norwood and Chris Harvey are the only two representatives for VU in the Northwoods League this summer. Norwood is playing for Lakeshore and Harvey for Duluth. Both rising juniors played in the NECBL last summer. Norwood has nine RBI in his first four games for the Chinooks.
Keenan Kolinsky is spending the summer in the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League with the Sag Harbor Whalers. The lefty has posted 3.1 scoreless innings in his first two outings.
