LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Vanderbilt swimming team closed out the first day of the TYR ’85 Invite with two personal best times and a first-place finish on Friday at the Liberty Natatorium.
“A very solid effort today. The team as a whole is really bringing a lot of energy to the deck. I’m really looking forward to tomorrow and building on our swims from today,” said head coach Jeremy Organ.
The Commodores started day one off by competing in the 500-yard freestyle with six Dores advancing to the finals. Sophomore Krislyn Porter tabbed her personal best time in the event finishing at 5:02.02 to notch ninth place.
In the 200-yard individual medley, eight Commodores marked their spots in the finals with Lizzy Colwell leading the Dores with a fourth-place finish (2:04.33).
In the prelims of the 50-yard freestyle, six Dores advanced to the finals. Sophomore Tonner DeBeer lead the team marking a spot in the A final (23.64) followed by freshman Chantal Jordan touching in at 23.78.
In the finals of the 500-yard freestyle, junior Lara Hernandez-Tome finished in 4:59.10 to claim sixth place in the A final followed by Porter tabbing seventh (5:00.59). With this time, Porter beat her prelim best time to mark a personal best in the event.
Earning a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley, Colwell touched in at 2:04.23 in the A final. In the B final, two Commodores notched top finishes. Kaley Buchanan finished in 2:08.20 to place 15th and Lauren Thomas earned 17th place (2:07.82).
In the 50-yard freestyle finals, DeBeer claimed first place by touching the wall at 23.24 in the A final.
“The day was highlighted with Tonner winning the 50 free. She has had a really great season up to this point and has got herself in a good position to be successful at the end of the year,” added Organ.
Closing out the day with the 400-yard medley relay, the Vanderbilt A relay notched a third-place finish in 3:46.55.
The Dores return to action on Saturday to compete in day two of the TYR ’85 Invite.
