Strong Singles Lift Dores

Women's tennis grounds Cardinals, 6-1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt women’s tennis concluded their weekend sweep with a 6-1 victory over the visiting Louisville Cardinals to improve to 6-1 on the season. 

After dropping the doubles point to open the match, the Commodores went undefeated at singles to come out victorious Sunday afternoon. 

Seeing Double 

  • The Dores dropped the doubles point in a thrilling three sets. 
  • Anna Ross and Holly Staff jumped out to a quick advantage with their 6-2 set win at No. 1 doubles. 
  • Court 3 finished next where Marcella Cruz and Dasha Kourkina fought hard in a 6-4 decision in favor of the Cardinals.  
  • Anessa Lee and Yufei Long battled it out on Court 2, knotting it up at 5-5 but ultimately fell at No. 2 doubles, 7-5, as the Cardinals clinched the doubles point. 

Singles Sweep 

  • Amy Stevens continued her successful weekend at home, dropping just one game Sunday as she took down her Cardinal opponent, 6-1, 6-0.  
  • Cruz gave the Dores their first lead of the afternoon with her victory in straight sets on Court 4 (6-4, 6-0). 
  • After sweeping the first set, 6-0, Lee grabbed the Dores’ third point of the day with a 6-3 second set victory at No. 2 singles. 
  • At No. 1 singles, Ross called match with a tightly contested three-set match. After taking set one, 6-1, the junior fell in set two to force a third contest. She clinched match point with a convincing 6-3 third set victory to give Vandy the 4-1 lead. 
  • Playing out a third set tie-break, Staff claimed victory on Court 3 with a 10-5 set score. Staff took the first set, 7-5, before dropping the tiebreak in set two. 
  • On the final court, Kourkina took a pair of 6-1 victories to round out the match with the singles sweep.

The Commodores return to the court on Feb. 27 for a home double-header against Wofford and Belmont. First serve against Wofford is set for 10 a.m.
