No. 10/8 Vanderbilt suffers first loss of season

AUSTIN, Texas – All good things must end and on Wednesday night at the Moody Center in Austin, Texas, it was No. 10/8 Vanderbilt’s 16-game winning streak which came to an end in an 80-64 loss to Texas.

Vanderbilt (16-1, 3-1 SEC) was led by Duke Miles with 21 points on the night. Tyler Tanner added 17 to give him 17-straight contests in double figures while Tyler Nickel scored 10. Devin McGlockton finished the night with nine points and seven rebounds.

Texas (11-6, 2-2 SEC) notched its second-straight top 15 win behind 22 points from Matas Vokietaitis and 21 points from Tramon Mark. Dailyn Swain added 14 and Jordan Pope 12 in the Longhorns’ victory.

The Longhorns built a 42-37 halftime lead behind a red-hot attack, shooting 55 percent in the opening 20 minutes. Vandy stayed in touch thanks to an 8-of-15 performance behind the three-point line. The Commodores fell cold in the second half shooting just 8-of-30 from the field en route to 27 points, their lowest in a half this season. Vandy also committed eight turnovers in the second half as Texas pulled away.

Vanderbilt cut the deficit to four at 55-51 with 11:25 to play and trailed by just six with 9:21 to go, but the Dores connected on just three field goals the rest of the way.

Texas held a 30-14 advantage in the paint and outrebounded the Dores 42-24. Vanderbilt finished just 36.7 percent from the field, including a season-low 37 percent on two-point shots. The Commodores were just 5-of-14 on layups in the loss.

Vanderbilt returns home for a Saturday afternoon showdown against Florida. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. at Memorial Gymnasium on ESPN.
