Nashville, Tenn. — Jessica Stockard of Georgia smashed her heptathlon personal best by more than 350 points and needed nearly all of them to capture the individual title Friday at the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Stockard, the 2004 Big 12 heptathlon champion as a student at the University of Missouri, accumulated 5,720 points to win the event over LaToya McBride of Ole Miss, who also recorded a personal best with 5,654 points. The next two finishers, Beyonka McDowell of Arkansas and Caitlin Ward of Tennessee, also earned personal bests with 5,518 and 5,108 points, respectively.
Vanderbilt’s Josie Hahn, competing on an ailing left foot, fought back to claim sixth place, using a strong javelin throw to overcome a disappointing long jump. Her teammate, Garnetta Holloway, followed seventh with a personal best of 4,920 points.
The decathlon was captured by Tennessee sophomore Chris Helwick, who trailed into the last of 10 events before topping all competitors in the 1,500-meter run with a 4:34 effort. The performance enabled Helwick to overcome LSU’s Alleyne Lett for the victory.
Arkansas closed the Friday session in strong fashion, with junior Josphat Boit winning the men’s 10,000 meters in 29:39.58 and four Lady ‘Back runners finishing among the top six in the 10,000.
The Tennessee men and Georgia women lead the team competition heading into a busy Saturday schedule that features finals in the long jump, high jump, discus and 3000-meter steeplechase.
Auburn walked away with the first individual event of the meet when sophomore Cory Martin edged Tennessee senior Garland Porter to win the hammer throw. Another Georgia participant, Sultana Frizell, won the women’s hammer with a toss of 213’3″.
The men’s hammer competition opened the second day of activities at the SEC Championships, being staged on the Vanderbilt campus for the first time in nearly 70 years. The prestigious meet, featuring an array of 2004 Olympians and national championship-caliber athletes, continues through Sunday.

Quotes from individual winners of women’s events Friday, May 13, 2005
Jessica Stockard of Georgia, heptathlon “That was a huge PR (personal best), nearly 400 points better than my previous best (5,378 in 2004). It was just one or two events, I really seemed to do well in all of them. My teammates were driving me on and that helped. I just got a lot of energy from them being here.”
Quotes from individual winner of men’s event Friday, May 13, 2005
Auburn sophomore Cory Martin, hammer throw: “This was a great way to start off my second SEC outdoor championship. Last year I finished second and I came into the meet in second, but was able to throw my collegiate best and win my first title. I have two more events to go, so I will get some rest this afternoon and prepare for the discus tomorrow.”
Tennessee sophomore Chris Helwick, decathlon: “Today my best event was the hurdles. I feel good, not too tired. Maybe it’s just adrenaline. This really surpassed my expectations. I’m obviously happy, but I haven’t been hyping this (winning the SEC decathlon) up. I’ve been talking with the sports psychologist and it’s helped a lot. When you don’t focus on the outcome but focus on each event by event, it turns out better.”
