Stellar pitching highlights scrimmage

Sept. 30, 2010

It’s probably going to start sounding like I’m the incoming president for the Derek Johnson fan club. First, that fan club doesn’t exist as far as I know and second, it’s hard to argue with the impressive arms on display early on.

The Gold team won 3-1 Thursday afternoon as Sam Selman started with a scoreless inning followed by freshmen Robert Hansen and Kevin Ziomek who combined to scatter four hits over five innings while striking out seven combined.

The defensive highlight of the day, also from Team Gold, was an awesome diving catch by Mike Yastrzemski on Aaron Westlake’s screaming liner to the left centerfield warning track by the Tennessee Pork Producer sign. Just another incredible defensive gem for what may be a pretty good highlight reel for Yaz over the course of his career.

The hardest hit ball (not caught by Yaz) was off the bat of freshman infielder Joel McKeithan. McKeithan, who bears an uncanny resemblance to former Commodore Ryan Flaherty (only a right-handed version), hit a hard shot off of Hansen that ricocheted over to shallow right-field to knock in Team Black’s only run.

Team Gold took advantage of two errors and timely RBI by Jason Esposito and Jack Lupo (transfer from the Air Force Academy) to knock in a run apiece. Pitching still ruled the day for Team Black as Corey Williams, T.J. Pecoraro, Steven Rice and Navery Moore combined for just one earned run on three hits over six innings with seven punchouts. I know, most of these same guys were pretty good the other day too, right?!

Program note: No scrimmage Friday. Next one is scheduled for Saturday. Check it out while you listen to the football team beat UConn.
