Spears, Bomar Named to Anniversary Team

Former Vandy football greats honored by Southern Conference

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Southern Conference announced today its 100th Anniversary Teams as part of its year-long celebration of 100 years of existence and highlighted former Commodores Lynn Bomar and W.D. Spears.

Bomar, a 1956 College Football Hall of Fame inductee, played end for the Commodores from 1921-24 and also played basketball and baseball for Vanderbilt. He was named an All-American in 1923 and went on to play two seasons for the New York Giants in professional football.

A 1962 College Football Hall of Fame inductee, Spears played quarterback for the Commodores from 1925-1927. He was named an All-American in 1927 and led Vandy to a 16-2-2 record his final two seasons.

Vanderbilt University was a member of the Southern Conference from 1922-1932 before it left to join the Southeastern Conference with 12 other universities.
