Soccer ties Saint Louis, 2-2

ST. LOUIS – Vanderbilt soccer concluded its non-conference road schedule with a 2-2 tie against Saint Louis Sunday afternoon at Hermann Stadium.

The Commodores held a 2-1 lead at halftime, but the Billikens tied the game up in the second period and forced overtime. VU is now 5-1-1 on the year, while SLU moved to 3-1-2.

Sophomore forward Molly Kinsella put the Commodores on the board at the 25:42 mark in the first half, scoring her second goal of the season off a 20-yard free kick from the left side.

Junior midfielder Megan Forester followed that up at the 36:32 point with her first goal of the season. She scored from the left side just inside the 18-yard box off an assist from Taylour Claxton to give the Commodores a 2-0 lead. The ball deflected off the Billiken goalkeeper and off of the post and in for the score.

Sally Sinclair put SLU on the board with just under five minutes left in the first half as she scored off a Kristen Sapienza serve from the far right side to cut the VU lead to 2-1 at the half.

Kelly Waeckerle tied it up ten minutes into the second period, dribbling in from the left side and scoring above VU keeper Rachel Bachtel.

The goal was just one of two shots the Commodore defense gave up in the second half, while the offense could not convert on seven shots, including four on goal.

Saint Louis outshot Vanderbilt 8-0 in the overtime periods with Bachtel making four saves in the process. She finished with seven saves in the game, while SLU’s Hannah Perry had six of her own.

Saint Louis finished with a 15-11 shot advantage and an 8-4 corner kick lead. Senior midfielder Katie Schulz led the Commodores with three shots, two on goal, while Megan Kinsella added two shots on goal of her own. Julia Brandenberg led the Billikens with four shots, including three on goal.

The Commodores will return home to start a five game home stand next Sunday, Sept. 21 against UAB.
