Soccer shuts out Tide, 2-0

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt women’s soccer team scored its second shutout win of the 2010 Southeastern Conference season Sunday, defeating Western Division leader Alabama, 2-0.

Junior Candace West and sophomore C.J. Rhoades notched goals for the Commodores, who improved to 7-7-2 on the season (3-3-2 in SEC play).

West put the Commodores on the scoreboard in just the third minute. Taking a corner kick from the right side, West used her deadly left foot to bend the ball inside the back post and into the side netting. It was her second set-piece goal of the year and her team-leading fourth goal overall.

In the second half, senior Megan Kinsella beat a pair of defenders in Alabama’s 18-yard box and taken down near the six. Rhoades stepped up to taking the resulting penalty kick, and confidently put the ball away into the right side of the net.

Senior goalkeeper Rachel Bachtel notched her sixth shutout of the season by making four saves.

After taking four points from this weekend’s games, the Commodores are tied for sixth in the SEC. Vanderbilt, Auburn and Alabama each have 11 points. LSU is fifth with 12 points, behind Tennessee (13), Georgia (15), South Carolina (19) and Florida (19). On the outside of the SEC Tournament race looking in are Kentucky and Arkansas (eight points apiece), Ole Miss (six points) and Mississippi State (zero points).

The Commodores travel to Starkville this week for a Thursday matchup with Mississippi State before returning home for Senior Day on Sunday, Oct. 24, against Ole Miss.
