NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt women’s soccer team jumped out to a two-goal lead on Senior Day but could not hold off a charge from the Ole Miss Rebels, falling 3-2 Sunday at the VU Soccer Complex.
Vanderbilt honored its nine-member senior class with an on-field ceremony before the game, then used all nine of those seniors in its starting lineup. The group responded, scoring a pair of goals in the game’s opening five minutes.
Senior Megan Kinsella got the Commodores on the board first just 1:28 into the game. A cross from Kristine Chaklos bounced dangerously in the box before Kinsella headed it past the Ole Miss goalkeeper.
Less than three minutes later, the Commodores would strike again. Megan Kinsella slotted a pass to classmate Nicole Adams, who met the ball on a diagonal run toward the penalty spot. The Ole Miss keeper save Adams’ first effort, but she put the rebound in off a deflection.
Ole Miss would get its first goal back in the 28th minute on the first of two penalty kicks by Alix Hildal. Hildal would score a hat-trick for the Rebels, with her second goal tying the game in the 37th minute off a pass from Morgan Zigelsky. Hildal gave Ole Miss its first lead in the 48th minute on another penalty kick.
The Commodores outshot the Rebels, 18-9, on the day — finding the crossbar and the post once each. Vanderbilt also took 10 corner kicks in the game.
Vanderbilt travels to Kentucky this Friday, Oct. 29, for both teams’ regular season finale. More information on the implications of that game and the rest of Friday’s action will be available from the Southeastern Conference early in the week.
