Soccer falls to Florida, 2-0

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Commodore women’s soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 7 Florida on Sunday afternoon at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex.

The Gators took the lead in the 14th minute on a Taylor Travis goal. VU goalkeeper Rachel Bachtel deflected a cross away from the six-yard box, but the Commodores were unable to clear, and Travis’ volley sailed over a pair of VU defenders and into the goal.

Bachtel made six saves on the day, including five in the first half. The Commodores were outshot 11-1 in the first 45 minutes, but returned in the second half to hold a 9-7 advantage in shots.

Vanderbilt had a number of chances in the second half, with their best opportunities coming on free kicks. Catherine Wearn had a shot from point-blank range in the 74th minute, but UF keeper Katie Fraine was there to make the stop.

Florida got its second goal in the 79th minute against the run of play. McKenzie Barney found the side netting from the top of the 18-yard box after passes down the right flank by Jo Dragotta and Ashlee Elliott.

Vanderbilt will embark on a four-game road trip next week, beginning with a game in Knoxville on Friday, Oct. 1. On Sunday, Oct. 3, the Commodores will play at Georgia in a game televised by ESPNU.
