NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Commodore women’s soccer team continued its winning ways at home with a 2-0 victory over visiting Valparaiso Friday night at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex.
The game marked the Commodores’ third straight home shutout after wins over Southern Miss and Tennessee Tech two weeks ago.
Vanderbilt (4-3) got its goal from sophomore Dana Schwartz and senior Molly Kinsella. In the 35th minute, the ball fell to Schwartz’s feet outside the 18-yard box. The Nashville native struck a rocket into the top right corner of the goal to give Vanderbilt a 1-0 lead.
In the 51st minute, Kinsella got the insurance goal for the Commodores. The Memphis product, who has led the Commodores in scoring each of the past three seasons, earned a free kick on the edge of the penalty area. Kinsella curved the ball around a wall of four Valpo defenders and screaming past Crusader goalkeeper Kristen Manski.
Vanderbilt outshot Valparaiso, 10-6, though the Crusaders had an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks. Manski made four saves for Valpo, while Vanderbilt goalkeeper Rachel Bachtel had three stops for her third shutout of the season.
Vanderbilt returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 19, as Wisconsin visits the VU Soccer Complex for a 1 p.m. CT tilt.
