Soccer defeats Tennessee Tech, 2-0

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Commodore women’s soccer team earned its first shutout of the season in a 2-0 win over Tennessee Tech Friday at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex.

Junior Candace West and sophomore C.J. Rhoades scored the Commodore goals, both in the first half.

West scored her team-best third goal of the season in the fourth minute. Playing a give-and-go with senior Molly Kinsella, the Doraville, Ga., native got behind the TTU defense and her finish — low inside the near post — gave the Commodores a 1-0 lead early in the contest.

Ten minutes later, senior Megan Kinsella whipped a cross from the right side into the top of the box. Tennessee Tech got a head to the ball but the clearance attempt fell to Rhoades’ foot about 25 yards from net. The Danville, Ind., product struck a one-timer into the upper-right corner to give VU a 2-0 lead.

Senior Rachel Bachtel made three saves to earn her 17th career shutout for the Commodores.

Vanderbilt will remain at home this weekend as another team of Golden Eagles visits on Sunday. The Commodores will play host to Southern Miss at 1 p.m. CT.
