Soccer defeated by Wake Forest, 4-1

BLACKSBURG, Va. — Sophomore C.J. Rhoades tallied Vanderbilt’s lone goal in a 4-1 defeat Friday at the hands of No. 16 Wake Forest in the opening game of the Hilton Garden Hokie Invitational on the campus of Virginia Tech.

The two teams played a scoreless first half behind five saves from VU senior goalkeeper Rachel Bachtel. Wake Forest got on the board first in the second half with a Katie Stengel goal in the 49th minute.

Eighteen minutes later, Rhoades got an equalizer for Vanderbilt — her second goal of the season. The Commodores had a chance to take the lead soon after, but a save by WFU goalkeeper Audrey Bledsoe kept the game knotted at 1-1.

The Demon Deacons would score three goals between the 72nd and 81st minutes. Stengel notched her second at the 71:20 mark, and insurance goals came from Rachel Nuzzolese and Cheyenne Biehl.

Vanderbilt will remain in Blacksburg for the weekend, playing host Virginia Tech on Sunday, Sept. 12, at 1 p.m. CT. A live web cast will be available on http://hokiesports.com/.
