Commodore track and field star Simone Charley added to her list of accomplishments on Friday when she was named a first-team Academic All-American for track and field/cross country by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), becoming the first Vanderbilt track and field/cross country athlete to be named a first-team Academic All-American and only the second track and field/cross country athlete to be named to an Academic All-American team (Stacey Carpenter, 1999).
Charley is a Hoover, Ala. native and is a dual-major in psychology and sociology. She was a 2017 NCAA Indoor First Team All-American and broke the indoor school record in the triple jump with a leap of 44-5.25. Charley also competes for the Vanderbilt soccer team. She was also a second-team All-American in 2014 and a first-team selection in 2015 and 2016.
In all, Charley becomes the 13th first-team selection to an Academic All-American team and the first since Molly Kinsella was named a first-team honoree for women’s soccer in 2010. Charley is also the third Vanderbilt student-athlete to be named to a CoSIDA All-American team this academic year, joining Kacy Scarpa, who was a third-team member of the women’s soccer team, and Luke Kornet, who was honored as a second-team selection for men’s basketball. 2016-17 marks the most academic All-Americans for Vanderbilt athletics since 1999, when Vanderbilt had four selections.
