Simone Charley earns Scholar All-America honors

Dec. 14, 2017

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Simone Charley added two more awards to her list this week as she was named a third team Scholar All-American and second team Scholar All-South Region, the United Soccer Coaches announced.

“I am really proud of Simone after having a year off and coming back to impact the team the way she did,” said head coach Darren Ambrose. “I think the award shows that at Vanderbilt you can be the best of both. As an athlete, she has excelled on the track and now on the soccer field and also in the classroom. In an incredibly challenging and rewarding institution, she flies the flag of being a true student-athlete.”

Charley is the Commodores first Scholar All-American since Molly Kinsella earned the award back in 2010.

In her final season with the Commodores, Charley return to the field after redshirting in 2016 and did not skip a beat. Known for her threat to score goals at a high rate, Charley was just as effective distributing this season from the forward position.

She led the team in assists (6) and points (14) and was second in goals (4). This was her third straight season she had led the Commodores in points. During her freshman year, she finished second on the team in points.

Three of her four goals were game-winners this season. She tallied the game-winner in both games of the Commodores early season road trip against Boston College and UMass. Charley totaled a career-high four points against the Tigers as she assisted on two of the Commodores goals in the first half and scored the game-winner in the second half.

She also assisted on Rebecca Rossett‘s game-winner against Georgia and Leila Azari‘s game-winner against Kentucky.

As her career comes to a close, Charley will see her name in the Commodore record book in multiple categories. Her career marks in goals (25), assists (18), and points (68) all fall in the top-10 all-time in Vanderbilt history.

Players on this year’s Scholar All-America Teams will be formally acknowledged for their accomplishments on the field and in the classroom at the All-America Luncheon on January 20, 2018. The event will be held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in conjunction with the 2018 United Soccer Coaches Convention.
