Sharma named SEC Player of the Week

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Astra Sharma was named the Southeastern Conference’s Player of the Week for women’s tennis as announced by the conference office Wednesday morning.

Sharma’s Statements:

  • Reigning SEC Player of the Year has clinched three of the Commodore’s four victories
  • Sharma clinched Vandy’s sweep over No. 1 Stanford on Saturday
  • The Cardinal have not been swept in records dating back to 1998-99
  • Since joining the Commodores after her grand slam debut in the Australia Open doubles tournament, Sharma boasts a 4-0 singles record
  • Sharma went undefeated in doubles on the weekend, clinching the doubles point over Stanford
  • Unranked Sharma/Contreras knocked off Stanford’s No. 3 Emily Arbuthnott/ Michaela Gordon 6-3
  • Sharma sits two victories away from her 100th-career singles win
  • Sharma boasts a 98-29 overall singles record

Sharma and the rest of the Commodore contingent will hit the road for the first time this season, traveling north to Madison, Wisc. to compete as the top-seed at ITA National Team Indoors. VU will face off against Wake Forest this Friday at 6:30 p.m. CT.
