Shannon Earns Second Vanderbilt Invitational Title

4/22/2006

Nashville, Tenn. — Commodore middle distance runner Caitlin Shannon captured her second Vanderbilt Invitational individual title Saturday, winning the 800 meters in a career best effort.

After dominating the first day of competition Friday, the Commodores’ only individual victory Saturday was provided by Shannon, who lowered her 800-meter personal best by three seconds with a 2:09.21 performance. On Friday, Shannon set another career best, winning the 1,500-meter run.

The Western Kentucky women’s squad received excellent performances from both relay foursomes Saturday, leading the way to five event victories. The WKU 400-meter relay won in 45.60, while the 4×400-meter relay foursome concluded the running events in style, winning in 3:41.78. The Hilltoppers also received sprint wins by Shanea Wilson in the 100 (11.71) and Alecia Brown in the 400 (54.53).

Three women from MTSU — Stephanie Tamgho (triple jump), Antranette Stringer (200-meter dash) and Candice Robertson (100-meter hurdles) — captured individual wins Saturday at the meet. The feat was duplicated by a trio of women from Southern Illinois.

In the men’s division, Middle Tennessee received a strong showing from its sprint corps while earning five individual wins Saturday. Both MTSU relay units left with titles: the 4×100-meter foursome winning in 39.82, the 4×400-meter squad taking their event in 3:12.43. Victorious MTSU sprinters were Orlando Reid in the 200 (20.64), Sean Waller in the 400 (46.99) and 110-meter hurder Linnie Yarbrough (13.81). Juan Walker also gave the Blue Raiders a win in the long jump (24’9.25″).

The Tennessee men’s squad, competing with less than a full contingent, received individual victories by Yarrick Kincaid in the 800 (1:49.89) and Andrew Brunson in the high jump (6’9.75″).
