ITA Ohio Valley Regional Tournament Central

Vanderbilt carried the momentum from its strong showing in the opening rounds yesterday at the ITA Regionals into day two of play, as several Commodores advanced once again, with both the singles and doubles bracket now down to the round of 16 heading into Saturday.

The Commodores entered the day as the only team to advance four doubles pairs into the second round and two of the four Vanderbilt duos advanced once again. Top-seeded Billy Rowe and Lachlan McPhee saw their first doubles action of the tournament and defeated host Tennessee’s Adam Walton and Preston Touliatos by a score of 8-6 in the second round after receiving a first-round bye on Thursday. 16th-seeded Daniel Valent and Panu Virtanen marked the other Commodore pair to make it through to the round of 16 after downing Chris Edge and Jan Porteset from Middle Tennessee, 8-7.

Third-seeded Daniel Valent, who is undefeated during the fall season, continued to anchor Vanderbilt in singles play on Friday with two more victories, including a 6-4, 6-3 win over Miguel Este (ETSU) and a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Ramon Van Flymen (EKU). Valent is joined in the round of 16 by Alex Ross, who defeated No. 30 Clement Filho (Louisville) by a score of 6-3, 6-4 in the second round before advancing on and downing No. 15 Stephan Koenigsfest (Purdue); 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Billy Rowe also won his second round match against Tennessee’s Andrew Rogers, but then fell in the round of 32 to No. 10 Enzo Wallart (Kentucky); 6-4, 6-0.

Lachlan McPhee and Tate Allwardt both bounced back from tough first round losses on Thursday and picked up victories in the consolation bracket. They will move on in the consolation draw and compete again on Saturday beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Saturday’s action will begin with two consecutive rounds of doubles matches, which will whittle the current field of 16 down to the final four. Saturday will also feature the round of 16 in the singles championship draw, as well as two rounds of consolation singles play.
