Seven members of the Vanderbilt track and field team are in Bloomington, Ind. this week for the NCAA East Preliminary Round. The meet, which takes place May 26-28, is being held at Indiana University’s Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex.
Katherine Hendricks, Meagan Martin, Brionne Williams, Rita Jorgensen, Alexa Rogers, Liz Anderson and Jordan White will compete against the 48 best performers in the East Region, hoping to place in the top 12 of each event to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championship meet in Des Moines, Iowa, on June 8-11.
Here’s a look at each event the Commodores will compete in this week.
1500m, first round – Thursday, 3:30 pm CT
Jordan White and Alexa Rogers will both compete in the 1,500-meter race on Thursday afternoon. White is set to run in the first heat, while Rogers will race in the fourth and final heat. The top five finishers of each heat, as well as the next four fastest times, will advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday at 5:30 pm CT. There will be two heats in the quarterfinals, and the top five finishers in each heat, plus the next two fastest times, will advance to the national semifinals in Des Moines.
Pole Vault, qualifying round – Thursday, 5 pm CT
Katherine Hendricks and Meagan Martin will attempt to improve on their shared school record of 12’8″, which they set at the SEC Championships earlier this month. Martin and Hendricks are both slated for the second flight of competitors. Out of the 48 participants, the final 12 remaining will advance to the national finals.
800m, first round – Thursday, 6:30 pm CT
Rita Jorgensen is set to race in the second of six heats in the 800-meter race. The top three finishers in each heat, plus the next six fastest times, advance to the national quarterfinals on Friday at 5:30 pm. From those three heats, 12 runners will advance to the national finals in Des Moines.
High Jump, qualifying round – Friday, 12 pm CT
Brionne Williams earned a spot in the high jump competition after the first announcement was made last week. She qualified with a personal best height of 1.73m. She will look to improve on that mark as she prepares for the USA Junior Track & Field Championships, scheduled for June 23-26 in Eugene, Ore. Just like the pole vault, the high jump features two flights. The final 12 participants will advance to the finals.
5,000m, national semifinal – Saturday, 7:05 pm CT
Liz Anderson earned a spot in the 5,000-meter competition with a qualifying time of 16:37.21. She is set to race in the second of two heats on Saturday evening. The top five finishers in each heat, as well as the next two fastest times, will advance to the national finals in Des Moines.
