Bloomington, Ind. – Commodore fifth-year senior Erika Schneble and sophomore Lauryn Smith set indoor personal bests to highlight the Vanderbilt effort this weekend at the Indiana Relays.
Schneble, from Hendersonville, N.C., set a pair of indoor bests, including the third fastest Commodore time ever at 3,000 meters, a 9:43.24 clocking that earned a fifth place finish. Schneble also finished second in the mile with a 4:58.53.
Smith, from Carrolton, Texas, became just the third Commodore to reach 19 feet in the long jump. Smith’s 19’0″ effort was good for third overall.
The Commodores’ 4×800-meter relay foursome of Stephanie Douglas, Stephanie Mehr, Chavon Rhabb and Amanda Scott also finished second overall. The unit’s clocking of 9:32.03 ranks second all-time.
Schneble continues to demonstrate excellent form with the Southeastern Conference Championships scheduled in three weeks. Her performance of 9:43.24 took more than four seconds off her previous 3,000-meter best, achieved in January at the University of Kentucky. Only two Commodores have run the distance faster – Amy Huss (9:40.43 in 2006) and Beth Tallent (9:41.90 in 1991).
Another Commodore fifth-year senior, Brittany Sizer, ran a personal best behind Schneble in the 3,000-meter race. Sizer’s 9:55.38 ranks sixth all-time among Commodores.
Schneble’s 4:58.53 effort in the mile ranks 10th all-time among Commodores.
Smith’s long jump personal best ranks third all-time on the team, behind the school record 19’8″ by Ryan Tolbert in 1996 and 19′.5″ by Julie Walk in 1997.
