Wide receivers George Smith and Justin Wheeler met with the media Monday to talk about Saturday’s game at Kentucky.
George Smith, R-Sr., WR, Pembroke Pines, Fla.
How is your conditioning after the Florida game?
“I’ve been struggling a little bit here and there with the hamstring, but I’m doing really well. The trainers are getting me in and out of the training room. I’m just getting ready to play.”
How does it feel to have the New York Times do a story on you that is obviously of national interest?
“It really didn’t hit me until I started getting phone calls and e-mail from my teacher, and just realizing how big the “New York Times” is. I think that was just a good feeling to know that my story can be heard nationwide. It’s really exciting for me and my family, and I hope people read it and get inspired and look at it in a positive way.”
Does the positive you’ve gained from your experience help motivate the team in this slump, a testament that things can get better?
“Oh yeah, I think we all know that. It can get rough during the season, especially in the SEC. I think we’re still positive. We know we’re going to get there. We just have to get over this hump. We know where it starts. It starts in practice and keeping the positive energy in the locker room.”
Justin Wheeler, R-Jr., WR, North Augusta, S.C.
Is the team standing positive right now?
“We’re still confident, but the only thing missing in the W. We’re still seeking our first W in four games, so we’re just trying to get something going, something to build on.”
What’s the mood in the locker room?
“We’re frustrated. After losing a game you’re frustrated. But when it’s time to practice for the next week, the last game is out of our mind. We’re just trying to win the next game. It’s not a really hyped mood in the locker room, but the focus is there.”
Where you able to build on any of the team’s successes in the second half against Florida?
“We moved the ball better. We played defense a little bit better in the second half. But, in the first half I thought we were moving the ball pretty well, but we’d get a penalty that would send us back. That happened like three or four drives, and I think that’s what killed us. Then they would score on long passes and shut us down.”
Talk about the Vanderbilt-Kentucky series?
“It’s been a good one since I’ve been here. Before I came here that it always comes down to the wire, because we’re pretty even teams. Recently they’ve come out on the upper end, which is not good. So, we’re trying to change that.”
