Quick Slant: SEC leadership

Nov. 4, 2010

ab_250_grad.jpgQuick Slant is an array of brief insights and occasionally opinionated overviews of collegiate athletics in general and the Vanderbilt Commodores in particular.

  • SEC Leadership: The NCAA just released Graduation Success Rate (GSR) for the 2000-2003 cohorts as it allows ample time for student-athletes to earn degrees. As usual, Vanderbilt led the SEC in this significant measurement with only women’s golf (88%) and football (89%) under 93%. Keep in mind this is for the Class of 2003. As a way of quick comparison, there were football programs in the SEC with GSR’s of 40%. Four of our teams – women’s basketball, men’s tennis, lacrosse and men’s golf – checked in at 100%.
  • Dot Poag, who for many years helped our fans get into their football and basketball seats as our ticket manager, says she will be spending time in the ticket office once again as a volunteer. Raise your hand if you knew that she was Roy Skinner’s sister-in-law.
  • Major league Commodores Pedro Alvarez and Mike Baxter are already back on campus working out and a host of others including David Price will be here soon.
  • Molly Kinsella was voted to the first team of the ESPN Academic All-America District 4 honor squad. The Memphis soccer senior carries a 3.89 g.p.a. in molecular & cellular biology. You’d think she would be a no-brainer (bad pun) in academic voting but Vanderbilt people would be amazed and disappointed by how times our good candidates are beaten in voting by someone from Directional Tech. Molly advances to another round of voting that will determine Academic All-Americans.
  • Who Said Its Cushy? Our superb Director of Digital and Social Media Brandon Barca suffered a ruptured eardrum as the football team’s charter was taking off after the Arkansas football game. He had been been a bit under-the-weather but just like in Hollywood, Brandon believes the vucommodores.com show must go on.
