Quick Slant: Franklin on the air

Oct. 6, 2011

Quick Slant is an array of brief insights and occasionally opinionated overviews of collegiate athletics in general and the Vanderbilt Commodores in particular.

joe_200_morning.jpgAnd speaking of news, Franklin will take a few minutes Friday morning to join Vanderbilt alumnus and MSNBC’s highly rated “Morning Joe” co-host Willie Geist live via satellite. Geist, a former Vanderbilt Hustler assistant sports editor and 1997 alumnus, has been having some on-air fun this fall with fellow host Joe Scarborough, an Alabama graduate, and they have moved the show to originate Friday morning from Tuscaloosa. Quick Slant is told that Broadway Joe Namath will also appear on the segment, which will be live approximately 7:45 a.m. CT.

Melanie Balcomb and her staff will be participating in next Wednesday’s Flulapalooza mass vaccination exercise sponsored by the Vanderbilt Medical Center. VUMC will attempt to set a Guinness World Record by giving 8,000 flu shots to university staff and students during an eight hour period. Why? The official goal of the event is to test the Medical Center’s emergency mass vaccination plan as if there really were a pandemic.

NAME DROPPING – Matt Freije expects to know shortly which international city he, his wife and two young children will move to as he pursues his professional basketball career. There are few guys that work harder on their game or in a weight room than the 6-10 former Commodore star.
