Quick Slant: Fall break in South Africa

Nov. 17, 2010

Quick Slant is an array of brief insights and occasionally opinionated overviews of collegiate athletics in general and the Vanderbilt Commodores in particular.

  • What does senior basketball player Joe Duffy have in common with women’s tennis coach Geoff Macdonald? Both are bloggers for the New York Times. While Macdonald has blogged on professional tennis for several years, Duffy’s debut with the Gray Lady was Tuesday (Nov. 15). Duffy’s entry is found on The Quad section.
  • The men’s and women’s tennis teams will spend fall break in South Africa. They leave for Johannesburg Saturday (Nov. 20) and return eight days later after some matches and educational tours. The tour is part of Vanderbilt Athletics’ objective to give our student-athletes more than the normal sports experience. We will cover the South African experience with a revolving set of Commodore bloggers on this web site.
  • You probably have seen this by now but to be sure, the tip-off of our men’s basketball game with Appalachian State Nov. 27 will be 1:00 p.m. This was decided after we learned the Wake Forest football game time has been set at 6:30 p.m.
