Proving Strong in Puerto Rico

Dores claim six victories in fall season debut

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team commanded a strong start to the 2019-20 fall season by notching six victories in the first day of the Puerto Rico Fall Classic.

“Today was a very solid start to the fall season. We competed very well against a very good Wake Forest team. Our doubles were a bit rusty, but we will improve in time,” said head coach Geoff Macdonald.

Making their debut as a tandem, freshman Marcella Cruz and sophomore Georgia Drummy proved strong as they took down Clemson duo Riley and Middlebrooks, 8-4, earning the Dores’ first victory of the day.

Cruz remained successful heading into singles picking up her first singles victory as a Commodore with a straight set 6-2, 7-6 (6) victory over against Meredith (WFU).

“Winning as a Commodore for my team was definitely a great feeling. The energy we all gave off to help us succeed was very special and I cannot wait for more,” said the freshman.

Fellow freshman Anna Ross sailed through her freshman debut earning a straight set victory over Wake Forest’s Pesayento 6-4, 6-4, marking her first Vanderbilt win.

Kicking off her final season as a Commodore, senior Christina Rosca secured her first win of the fall with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Carter (WFU).

“It is very exciting starting my senior season off on such an amazing trip. I am looking to have fun the rest of the weekend and stay relaxed so that my best tennis can come out. We have some tough matches to finish the tournament these next two days,” said Rosca.

Opening the fall season with straight set victories, junior Amanda Meyer and Drummy both dominated to collect their first wins of the tournament.

The Commodores will battle in both singles and doubles on Saturday against Clemson, Georgia and Wake Forest beginning at 7 a.m. CT.
