BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Vanderbilt’s Chelsea Preeg has been named the SEC Women’s Tennis Player of Week, the league office announced Wednesday. Preeg becomes the second Commodore to be named SEC Player of the Week this season.
Preeg went undefeated in singles play last week, picking up a pair of wins against ranked opponents from fourth-ranked Notre Dame and 36th-ranked Georgia Tech. The VU sophomore defeated Notre Dame’s 108th-ranked Shannon Mathews on Friday in what was an incredible three set comeback victory.
Two days later, Preeg teamed up with Jackie Wu at No. 1 doubles to clinch the doubles point for the Commodores with an 8-6 win over Georgia Tech’s Sasha Krupina and Hillary Davis to improve to a team-best 22-5 overall and 5-1 this spring. Later in the match, Preeg took down No. 86 Sasha Krupina in three sets to improve to a team-best 24-8 overall and 9-4 in dual play.
Ranked 76th nationally, Preeg is now 5-2 at No. 2 singles including 3-1 in the SEC. The Naples, Fla., native has now defeated three ranked opponents in her last four matches.
No. 29 Vanderbilt (7-6, 2-2 SEC) will travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Friday for a showdown with Alabama. The match with the Crimson Tide (7-7, 0-4 SEC) will start at 3 p.m. CT.
