NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt football players Anfernee Orji and Wesley Schelling have been selected preseason All-SEC by Phil Steele. The duo appeared on Steele’s annual preseason list released Wednesday.
It marks the second preseason honor for Orji who also picked up All-SEC honors from Athlon. The Rockwall, Texas, native led the Commodores with 93 tackles last season. He added 13 tackles for loss and started all 12 games.
Orji finished 12th in the SEC in total tackles and had 13 tackles in Vandy’s win at Colorado State, the most by a Commodore in a game last season. Steele slotted Orji a second-team linebacker.
Schelling took over as the long snapper as a sophomore last fall. The native Nashvillian executed all 108 long snaps on the season per Pro Football Focus.
The Pearl-Cohn High School product was a five-start prospect (Kohl’s) and was named the 2019 William Hume Award winner, given to the outstanding football player in the Metro Nashville school system. Steele chose Schelling as the fourth-team long snapper.
The Commodores open their second season under head coach Clark Lea on Aug. 27 at Hawai’i (9:30 p.m. CT on CBS Sports Network). Vandy opens the home season Sept. 3 against Elon. Season tickets, group tickets and mini-plans are on sale now.
