Offensive Explosion

Dores beat Southern Illinois, 5-0

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt soccer team exploded for five goals in a 5-0 victory over Southern Illinois on Thursday night at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex.

Senior Raegan Kelley led the Commodores (2-2-1) with two goals and an assist on the night as part of the program’s first five-goal performance since a 5-1 win over LSU on Oct. 18, 2019.

“It was great for us to see the ball go in the back of the net,” Vanderbilt head coach Darren Ambrose said. “We executed when we had our chances. It was really great to see some of our younger players see game action and have success.”

Vanderbilt had a 24-2 advantage in shots against the Salukis (0-3-1) and held 66 percent of the possession on the night.

Peyton Cutshall got the Dores going with a strike from 18 yards out off a feed from Kelley in the ninth minute.

Just more than two minutes later, Madi Allen finished a corner kick from Maddie Elwell to make it 2-0 in favor of the home side. Kelley’s 26th minute goal extended the advantage to 3-0 heading into halftime.

The Dores continued to pressure Southern Illinois in the second half. Kelley cleaned up a loose ball from inside the six to make it 4-0 Commodores in the 52nd minute.

Freshman Hillary Schroeder capped the scoring in the 65th minute with her first career goal. Tina Bruni hit a corner kick to the far post and Quinn Cornog headed it back across the face of the goal where Schroeder capitalized.

Kate Devine was called upon to make one save in the first 64 minutes before giving way to Sophie Guilmette in goal for the Commodores.

Next up, Vandy hosts Pepperdine (4-1) at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex.
