NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt Vice Chancellor for Athletics and University Affairs and Athletic Director Candice Storey Lee and the Office of General Counsel (OGC) announced that Evan Guimond has joined the university as associate general counsel.
Guimond brings extensive experience unique to collegiate athletics from his time in private practice working with NCAA Division I institutions, among other clients, as well as serving as assistant director of enforcement for the NCAA. At Vanderbilt, he will primarily provide legal assistance to support the strategic and operational needs of Vanderbilt Athletics.
“Evan’s background at both the organizational and institutional levels gives him an ideal perspective on the challenges and opportunities in front of us today, as well as what lies ahead,” Lee said. “His subject-matter expertise will be valuable as we continue to position ourselves for this moment in college athletics. I am excited to welcome him to the team as we build on Vanderbilt’s momentum—competing at the highest level while remaining deeply committed to the holistic development and well-being of our student-athletes.”
As associate general counsel, Guimond’s responsibilities will range from negotiating agreements to advising on partnerships, to name, image and likeness (NIL) activities and other evolving legislative and legal matters, among others. As part of Vanderbilt’s OGC, he will report to Ruby Z. Shellaway, vice chancellor, general counsel and university secretary, and work closely with Lee and Vanderbilt Athletics.
“I am excited to work with Vice Chancellor Lee and Vanderbilt Athletics, as well as Vice Chancellor Shellaway and the talented team in Vanderbilt’s Office of General Counsel,” Guimond said. “College athletics is undergoing a period of significant change and uncertainty, and I look forward to helping Vanderbilt navigate the legal issues arising from this evolving environment.”
Guimond joins Vanderbilt after serving as a senior associate at Hogan Lovells Cadwalader US LLP, a renowned Washington, D.C.-based firm with global offices and clients. At Hogan Lovells Cadwalader, he worked with NCAA Division I schools on issues such as implementation of the House settlement and Title IX compliance and advised institutions on revenue sharing agreements, institutional partnerships and athletics-related commercial arrangements. He also worked extensively with non-sports clients, representing corporate and individual interests in civil and criminal proceedings.
Guimond also previously served as assistant director of enforcement for the NCAA, managing investigations related to a variety of potential Level I and Level II violations. Guimond previously served on the NCAA’s academic and membership and affairs staff.
After earning his bachelor’s degree in political science from Notre Dame in 2010, Guimond graduated from Virginia’s School of Law in 2015.
