NASHVILLE, Tenn. – No. 3/1 Vanderbilt soccer kept its fifth shutout of the season, scoring in both halves to secure a 2-0 victory over Kentucky Friday night.
The Commodores (11-0-1, 4-0-1 SEC) earned their ninth multi-goal win of the season, but it was not in the dominant fashion from which many of their home victories have come. Sydney Watts opened the scoring in the 15th minute, but the score remained 1-0 until the match’s final seconds, when Megan Hinnenkamp tapped it into an empty net against a scrambling defense.
Watts’ incredible goal-scoring run continues; she has found the back of the net in 11 of 12 matches, totaling 13 goals and four game-winners. Melania Fullerton earned the assist on the opening goal and now has five assists to go with three goals.
Vanderbilt outshot Kentucky (6-5-1, 2-2-1 SEC), 23 shots to six. The Wildcats forced just one save from Alexa Gianoplus en route to her third conference clean sheet. The fifth-year goalkeeper ranks third in the conference in save percentage (.793) and goals-against average (0.60).
It will be another week until the Dores are back in action, as they hit the road to take on Missouri next Friday at 6 p.m.
