CARY, N.C. — Senior Valeria Ray and junior Sophia Webster saw their doubles run end on Friday at the ITA All-American Championships.
The No. 29 ranked duo faced Virginia's No. 33 Martina Genis Salas and Katie Rolls in the doubles consolation quarterfinal round. Ray and Webster knocked off Ellison Reynoldson and Kaede Usui of Wisconsin on Thursday, while Virginia defeated Maryland opponents to set the quarterfinal matchup.
Vanderbilt seized control late in the first set, delivering clutch points to secure a 7-6 (5) tiebreaker. Up 4-2 in the next frame, Ray and Webster looked to be on their way to the consolation semifinals. But it was Virginia who slowly made its way back into the picture and evened the match after a 7-6 (1) set win.
Holding the momentum, Genis Salas and Rolls jumped out to a 6-2 advantage early in the third-set tiebreaker. The Commodores delivered six of the next seven points to move up 8-7. They were unable to fend off the Cavaliers, however, as Virginia secured the next three points to claim the match victory.
Junior Trinetra Vijayakumar and freshman Julia Jirakova are representing Vanderbilt at the Belmont/Lipscomb Invitational this weekend. Oct. 8-13 marks the next competition for the Dores, as Vanderbilt plays in the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships from Mason, Ohio.
