CARY, N.C. — Vanderbilt women's tennis will continue on at the ITA All-American Championships from Cary Tennis Park after securing a doubles win in a third-set tiebreaker against Wisconsin opponents on Thursday.
No. 29 ranked senior Valeria Ray and junior Sophia Webster faced Wisconsin's No. 76 Ellison Reynoldson and Kaede Usui in the doubles consolation round of 16. The Commodore duo quickly took control of the match after a 6-3 opening set. Up 4-1 in the second, Ray and Webster looked to be off and rolling into the next round.
The Badgers, however, claimed two straight games, and after Vanderbilt made the score 5-3, Wisconsin again secured consecutive games to even the set at 5-5. With the momentum in hand, Reynoldson and Usui took the second set 7-5 to force a third-set tiebreaker. After some back-and-forth opening points, the black and gold left no doubt on the court. Ray and Webster rattled off eight straight points to finish off the match and keep their NCAA Championship qualifying hopes alive.
